ASSESSMENTS WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Assessments have always played a crucial role in education, acting as a bridge between teaching and learning. This provides invaluable insights into a student's understanding, guiding educators in customizing their instruction to meet the needs of their learners. However, traditional methods of assessment often fall short, constrained by time, resources, and the ability to adapt to individual learning styles.
Get in Artificial Intelligence (AI) which is a transformative force that is redefining how assessments are conducted. AI has the potential to revolutionize education by providing dynamic and personalized assessments that are more efficient and insightful. By employing AI, educators can move beyond one-size-fits-all testing to a more complex understanding of each student’s capabilities. AI-driven assessments can quickly analyze large volumes of data, identify patterns, and offer real-time feedback, enabling teachers to respond slightly to students' needs.
For students, AI can create a more engaging and supportive assessment environment. It can provide instant feedback, pointing out strengths and areas for improvement, thus fostering a growth mindset. Moreover, AI can adapt questions in real-time based on a student's performance, ensuring that assessments are appropriately challenging and relevant.
In essence, the integration of AI in assessments represents a significant step towards a more personalized, efficient, and effective educational experience. Also, it empowers teachers with data-driven insights and supports students in their learning journey, ultimately enhancing the overall quality of education.
Since, I have already given an introduction of the importance of assesment and how AI can be applied, I would like to share the key learnings that I have gotten from this module since I consider that it is really important to understand the two types of assement that we worked with.
Firstly, formative assessment is a type of evaluation that teachers use throughout the learning process to monitor students' understanding and progress. Unlike traditional tests that happen at the end of a unit or course, formative assessments are ongoing and can take many forms, such as quizzes, class discussions, or quick written reflections. The goal is to gather feedback that can help both the teacher and students identify areas that need improvement before moving on to the next topic.
Additionally, formative assessments should be used regularly, during lessons, to ensure that students are keeping up with the material. They are important because they provide real-time insights into students' learning, allowing teachers to adjust their teaching strategies as needed. For students, formative assessments offer a low-pressure way to measure their understanding and seek help if necessary, promoting a more supportive and responsive learning environment.
During the specialization course, I learned how to use some AI tools to create formative assesment such as Quizizz, Kahoot, and Quizalize.
Quizizz is an online platform that allows teachers to create and share interactive quizzes with students. It provides immediate feedback and can be used for formative assessments by measuring students' understanding in real-time through fun, game-like quizzes. Kahoot! is a game-based learning platform where teachers can create quizzes, surveys, and discussions. Students participate using their own devices, and the platform provides instant feedback, making it effective for formative assessment by engaging students in a competitive and interactive way. Quizalize is an educational platform that enables teachers to create quizzes and track student performance. It offers detailed analytics and differentiates learning by providing different follow-up activities based on students' quiz results. This makes it useful for formative assessment, as it helps identify areas where students need improvement.
I really liked those tools because they are easy and enjoyable to have assesment with the students.
Moreover, summative assessments should be used after students have had the opportunity to learn and practice the material. They are important because they provide a comprehensive overview of a student's understanding and mastery of the content. The results from summative assessments are often used to assign grades, make decisions about student progression, and evaluate the effectiveness of the instructional program. While they offer a snapshot of student achievement, they are not meant for ongoing feedback during the learning process like formative assessments.
During the specialization course, one of the best AI tools that I have discovered to use to create summative assesment content is Magic school.
Since Magic School is an AI-powered platform designed for creating and administering assessments in educational settings. It offers tools for generating tests, quizzes, and exams that can be tailored to specific learning objectives and get summative assesment. The tool that I use the most to is generator worksheet because it gives me the exam format and I can include the objective of the evaluation.
The creation of assesment instruments could be complicated because it is about to the need to align them with specific learning objectives, ensuring they accurately measure student understanding. Additionally, teachers must consider the diverse needs of their students, creating assessments that are fair and accessible to all, including those with special needs or language barriers. Finally, time constraints make it difficult to develop, review, and refine assessments while managing other teaching responsibilities. That's why it may be stressful for teachers; however, with the help of AI it can be easy. The assesment instruments that I have been able to create using AI are rubrics, checklists, observation sheets, and exams. My favorite activity is the creation of rubrics since in my current job, it has helped me a lot. Also, it is necessary to point out that rubrics are mandatory for students' knowledge about what they will be evaluated. During the classes of the course, we were studying how to create rubrics with the AI tools such as GhatGPT, Copilot, Claude and Magic school. I can say that ChatGPT was the best tool to create the rubrics.
I would like to share some of the assesment instruments that I have been able to create with the help of AI:
This rubric was created by ChatGPT. I did it because my students were going to show me a product. I just wrote the prompt and the AI tool created it.
This rubric was created by Magic School. The purpose was to evaluated mys students' development of a topic that we were studying.
This activity was created with Quizalize for me to test my students' understanding of countable and uncountable nouns.

Finally, what I can grasp from this is that The main difference between formative and summative assessments is their timing and purpose. Formative assessment is ongoing and happens during the learning process, providing feedback to help students improve and allowing teachers to adjust their teaching. It’s like a check-up to see how well students are doing along the way. On the other hand, Summative assessment, on the other hand, occurs at the end of a learning period and evaluates what students have learned overall. It’s more like a final report card, summarizing student achievement and understanding after the instruction is complete.
